This is a link https://www.nebraska.gov/sos/corp/corpsearch.cgi?acct-number=1353886 to the NE Secretary of State's information about ES&S. I love internet research and am willing to further dig into to the corporate information if I can, but I need some direction as to what specifically is helpful. Thanks, Anna |

Jim Hightower, national radio commentator and author, wrote an article titled "Electronic Voting - The Issue in a Nutshell" for the website Vote America, Vote (accessed 8/11/2006) which explains: "Election Systems and Software [ES&S]: The largest seller of computerized voting systems in the country, ES&S counts Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel (R) as its former top exec. ES&S is a subsidiary of the McCarthy Group, Inc., a merchant-banking company based in Omaha. It's headed by Michael McCarthy, who (coincidentally) serves as Hagel's campaign treasurer. The senator continues to hold some $5 million worth of stock in the McCarthy Group - yes, the company that counts Hagel's votes in each of his elections!" 8/11/2006 Jim Hightower |

Anyone have anything new on ES&S-especially the iVotetronics machines. Has anyone tested the security, etc., etc? They do print out a paper list in the bottom left-hand side as you vote-but--who says the machine is registering the votes the same as shown on the paper? I assume this is possible to do in the programming of the source code. Secondly, what good is a paper printout that just rolls back into the machine if no one will ever see it unless there is cause for a recount----And, then, wouldn't you just get another printout of the same info-just like Diebold DRE's? |

The iVotronics are what was used in Sarasota, where they had 13% or 18,000 undervotes in the 13th Congressional district. That was actually low compared to 3 county's tallies in the Attorney General race: 22% undervote in Sumter County 18% undervote in Lee County 21% undervote in Charlotte County. These all used iVotronics machines. The undervote rates on the machines were probably even higher because these are overall rates including paper absentee ballots. For details, see: "Voting problems hit 4 counties" "State will probe complaints in Sarasota race" http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=6839 |

And wouldn't the ES&S Red Team report from CA be relevant as well? Or is there no connection at all to the iVotronics? What vote tabulation machine/system is used? |

ES&S wasn't reviewed in California: - Certification of the InkaVote+ was rescinded, but materials delivered and probably will be examined later. - AutoMARK, from the press release:
quote: ES&S chose not to submit its AutoMARK 1.0 to the top-to-bottom review because the company said it would not be using that system after 2007, and instead submitted a new system for certification. If ES&S’s new system does not receive state approval and ES&S attempts to use the currently certified AutoMARK 1.0 system again in 2008, Secretary Bowen has the right to attach additional conditions to its continued use.
- There are no iVotronics in California, so it wasn't included in the review. |

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that Sarasota, plus others, used the iVotronic. So, obviously they can either be hacked or are soooooo not secure that this can happen (egregious undervotes). Also, the poll workers carry around the little hand thingy to put in the machine b4 everyone votes. Exactly what does this thing do, and could it carry anything hackable in it (programming, etc.)? I am not very familiar with the workiings of the ivotronic. I just thought it was strange that Franklin County, Ohio switched to them so quickly after the Diebold fiasco here. Sounded like a possible ploy to shift the focus only because too many folks were aware of the Diebold problems--so let's all use ES&S---problem solved (yea right). I could be wrong but am very suspicious because of all the little Blackwell tricks that took place around here. |
