I just wanted to share my experience as a partially blind individual. I am always disturbed by the amount of "assistance" I am offered when I vote in elections. I want my vote to be private. I have enough vision to check my ballot (I vote on paper scanned ballots in Iowa), but it might just take me longer. I often get interupted by people and their children trying to pet my guide dog while I am voting. Needless to say, the experience is very frustrating. I have voted absentee in the past, but I am always suspicious as to whether or not my vote really counts. Also, I am an English instructor at a community college and I would say only 5% of my students voted on November 7th. I fear that either apathy or fraud has discouraged young people from voting. Thank you, Bev, for making your efforts public in "Hacking Democracy". I have felt very lost and frustrated in the past, but knowing that there is a grassroots effort to clean up the process provides me with a lot of hope. |

Hi Valerie, Thanks very much for sharing your perspective, especially about how annoying it can be when people try too hard to "help" when you're doing just fine. That is concerning about your students not voting. I wonder what reasons they would give. Maybe they could design an objectively-worded survey to find out. (But that wouldn't work if the class is Creative Writing or Analysis of 19th Century Romantic Literature, e.g.) |
