This was before I viewed HD. This is my experience and my observations. I attended the "traning class" to become an "Election Inspector" (I use this term very loosely), in our county, Onondaga, NY (central NY).I was appalled that the vital voting process uses volunteers who, in essence, can be anyone with or without the necessary cognitive understanding of the info presented and described at this class. The attendees were a mixture of well meaning people, but many of whom did not grasp much of the presented info nor have some of the abilities required, took the quiz and were (surprise) still passed! This creates the perfect environment for fraud to take place. I was truly shocked. It was evident that ANYONE was eligle for this important position.AND, if you did choose to work the polling centers, the shifts available were twelve hour shifts?!!! Therefore, at the close of the polls, everyone would be pretty much burnt out, hmmm. Those shifts are rough for anyone and especailly the vast majority of the volun. who are seniors. Hard to fathom that all this a coincidence. |

Hello Tere, Welcome to Black Box Voting. [If you look around this site you will see that everybody is using their full names. I've been using my full name on boards for years voluntarily but the administrators here have made it a requirement. It really does help keep the discussions civil and weed out trolls. You should be able to edit your name in the "Edit Profile" link on the left.] Since there will typically be 4 judges in each precinct, there is a good chance that one of them will have a handle on what's required. Many judges return year after year and that is the real reason that so many of them are seniors. Even though the elections systems change (almost every election it seams) the experience still counts. I thought the decision to work the polls was made before taking the training. I suppose you could always back out after the class but you should already know what's involved going in. The 12 hour shift is not that bad. You are ready for a mid-afternoon nap when the voters thin out after the noon rush. but the traffic picks up around 5 and the adrenalin starts to kick in to carry you through the closing. The closing activity is a divergence from the routine through the day so it's good to have a script to follow. I need to talk to my county elections director because this was not well organized here. |

I worked the polls for the first time this year, as a poll inspector. At first I thought why did they pick me as a Inspector? I was nervous. But I rose to the occaision, and I had a great team, and a wonderful time. I'm 50 years old, had to take a day off work to do this. But I'm gonna do it again. Yeah I was tired the day after, But let me tell you I was not tired at the end of the 12 hours, I was JAZZED, I almost couldn't sleep when I got home. My team wasn't tired, they did a great job. You should try it. |
