I'm new to this forum. I often hang out at DailyKos, where I posted this diary this morning:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/9/25/133528/414

People are talking about the problems at DailyKos, but the electronic voting machine issue is getting lost in all the other issues. But the issue of fair elections directly effects every other issue out there!

Is there an organized effort to get paper ballots into every polling place in the nation for this coming November elections? If so, not only will I participate, I'll try to get the people at DKos on it, too! Please let me know what's going on!

Thanks!

Jennifer,

Don't get too invested in immediacy on this. Raise your aimpoint. It is a complete legal and practical impossibility to get this accomplished by November 7. If that's going to upset you, go ahead and get upset now, because you have zero chance of getting it done this fast.

Changes this fundamental are giong to be incremental. If you can't deal with that, you may have gotten onto the wrong cause. Progress will be slow, but as long as it is going the right direction, there's reason for optimism.

Forget about a single court ruling flipping everything to paper. Jurisdiction is mostly local or state.

Well there is this:

Support the Emergency Paper Ballot Mandate of 2006

Near Zero chance Congress will take this up, but it may raise awareness of the issue and further embarass those elitists and bigots who persist in their efforts to limit ballot access.

Yes, but Kurt makes a good point. This is a critically important issue that doesn't have a quick fix. Dig in for the long haul and engage.

Thanks for posting the information on the bill -- and Jennifer, thanks for your interest in the issue, for communicating about it, and welcome to Black Box Voting!

We are now 6 weeks from a General Election. We are almost at the "no way out but through" point on this river.

That's no attitude for voting reform!
The election is too close so lets not try?
I agree that you have to be realistic in your expectations, but not your demands. This is the only time to put people in the hot seat for what they have or haven't done in the last two years. If you wait until after election day, it will get swept under the carpet for another year and a half.

This a voting reform site. Shame on anyone who tries to get people to back off, especially newcomers!

Mike,

No, that's not it at all. But this is a 365 day a year effort, not something to worry about only in late summer and autumn of even-numbered years.

And Mike, it is not being realistic in demands that is hurting this movement's credibility. The biggest problem we have is coming across as some unrealistic screaming meemies. We look like loons when we do that. Screaming "Now dammit, now!" helps no one and accomplishes nothing.

We should be focusing NOW on doing things that will be in place for 2008! That's how slowly this world works. HAVA passed in October 2002, and as of January 2006, many places were still not ready. These things take a LONG TIME!

Yes, they do take a long time. But about the only time you can get the general electorate to focus on these things is just before a general election. While now isn't the time for the work to get done, it is the time for the PR efforts. But most of the reason that it takes a long time is that there are people willing to monkey-wrench it.
