I've been wondering about this for some time, and I think that I've finally figured out what this stems from. Originally I thought the voter ID hysteria from the Republicans was just a diversion so that they could be on the panels about election fraud, but they really are fervent about this, and I believe that they're worried about the legal and illegal immigrants voting.

Stringent and cumbersome Voter ID makes it as hard as possible for anybody to get registered, offering all kinds of chances to disenfranchise people.

I suspect that the best that could be done is to take this issue away from them by encouraging stronger Voter ID laws that make the ID vetting process thorough but also make the process of getting the ID as accessible as possible. It should be free, for instance. A person should have the ability to get the people responsible for this to come to you if you can't afford to go to them and it should be FREE.
