Hello, I am one of the editors of a Wikipedia article on the 2004 U.S. presidential election controversy and irregularities in which BlackBoxVoting.org's and other prominent organizations' and individuals' role in the controversy is documented. For those of you not familiar with Wikipedia, it aims to be a collaboratively edited encyclopedia, so there are many people of widely divergent views involved. This makes achieving a consensus on controversial issues difficult, though not impossible. One of the keys to achieving such consensus is having every claim made in each article backed up by reliable sources. Recently the claim that BlackBoxVoting was hacked around the time of the 2004 election has been disputed. I personally remember seeing a "We've been hacked!" message on this website when it occured, but I can't seem to find it now. So, I am writing to respectfully ask for a link to that announcement, or in lieu of that, perhaps, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, ask the site administrators or other people with first-hand knowledge of the event in question to document what happened in as much detail as you feel is appropriate and post it somewhere (preferably permanent) so that it can be linked to from the main wikipedia article. Sincerely, Noosphere |

This site was under attack around the time of the 2004 election, repeatedly, using various methods, very aggressively. It became impossible to use it. It was not random. It was clearly a targeted attack using a variety of methods, which included DNS poisoning, corruption of the blog database, and penetration of the forum software. We did not regain control of all functions until January 2005 when we junked our forum software, junked our blog software (two entirely different and non-integrated programs at the time), we switched webmasters, switched hosts, nuked most of the files that had been uploaded to the server -- in short, altering the fundamentals on every attack point. We then put in controls that make it easier to identify hacks and we put in measures to help track the trail of bread crumbs left by would-be penetrators. We have placed a higher priority on setting up methods to learn as many details as possible about those who attempt pentration than on preventing attacks. I'm not going into any more of the gory details. We now turn over all suspicious circumstances to the FBI immediately. Bev Harris |
