This presentation is provided in both Powerpoint and pdf versions. Use it to energize and educate groups you belong to. This presentation will motivate your groups to take actions needed to achieve meaningful election oversight. Request a digital projector and a screen -- bring a laptop -- simply open the file and give the presentation. The text in the presentation can be your speaking script, or you can create your own speech to go with this. Practice a few times before you speak to the group. On Aug. 1, 2006 Black Box Voting will be releasing a CITIZEN'S TOOL KIT to help ordinary citizens take back elections. This tool kit is free and, beginning on Aug. 1, you can print copies and take them to meetings with you. The Tool Kit contains 20 individual modules, each only 1-2 pages long, very easy to follow. The idea is to just pick one -- any one -- and DO IT. The tool kit will provides practical, effective actions your group -- or any individual in your group -- can do to take back elections. We must shift our thinking from getting some sort of magic pill or potion or papertrail to the real solution: Ongoing management of our own government. Citizens have by and large lost touch with the skills needed to actively manage the government they are the owners of. The Black Box Voting tool kit teaches the skill sets needed to effectively oversee governmental functions, beginning with elections. We are telling it to you straight. There is no law or bill that you can pass to manage your government for you. Ongoing watchdog actions are needed by a significant number of citizens to exercise ongoing oversight, beginning with elections and continuing permanently. The missing ingredient in today's elections is the citizenry. Do not turn oversight over to any governmental agency, group, set of experts, or public official. This one is up to us. To use the pdf. format, simply download and click through one page at a time, showing it on the screen for your meeting. To use the PowerPoint presentation, you do NOT need a password. When the password screen comes up, just select "READ ONLY" and you'll get in with no password. (The password is only there to prevent changes). Here are the links to the public meeting presentation: pdf version: http://www.blackboxvoting.org/toolkit-presentation.pdf (3997 KB - this has many photos and graphics, allow time to download, high speed connection strongly recommended) PowerPoint version (You do NOT need a password, just click "READ ONLY" and it will let you in): http://www.blackboxvoting.org/toolkit-presentation.ppt (3,573 KB - many photos and graphics, allow time to download, high speed connection strongly recommended) Watch for the Citizen's Tool Kit to Take Back Our Elections -- Coming Aug. 1, 2006. * * * * * "We're counting the votes. Bev, Gotta argue a point in the ppt presentation in my state. There has been NO CHANGE in the ability to access poll books. There NEVER WAS that right here, after the election is over. It takes a court order - always has. |

Kurt -- See page 18:

You were an election official who tried to follow the rules. Many citizens will come up against public officials who simply say "no, you can't see them." This happened in Ohio. "Nope. You can't see the pollbooks." This is why we need more citizen oversight. One thing citizens need to take a look at is whether their local public officials even follow the law at all. When I was in Los Angeles County, I held a copy of the law in my hand. The law in California REQUIRES that citizens be able to view ALL locations where vote processing and tallying is going on. Conny McCormack had the central tabulators in a room out of view of the public and said the law didn't apply, then called half a dozen people from the sheriff's dept. to stand around and further block the view and intimidate citizens trying to see. No consequences. Basically, "So sue me." And of course by then, the election is over. Citizens need to see this kind of behavior for themselves. At this point there is NOTHING more important than getting citizens involved to see for themselves. It will vary greatly from place to place, but I contend that almost nowhere will citizens actually be able to authenticate the vote, no matter what they do. * * * * * "We're counting the votes.
