Video - Chimpanzee hacks Diebold voting system (Sept. 2004). Nearly three years later, California and Florida confirm the system is swiss cheese.

Diebold claimed their audit log "can't be altered by any human." (Georgia RFP procurement documents; the Georgia procurement process is now the subject of a lawsuit - plaintiffs include Garland Favorito; the suit makes a strong case that the system violated existing state law when it was purchased).

Baxter is a chimpanzee, not a human, but alter the audit log he did, in a project for Black Box Voting. He used a real Cobb County, Georgia vote file and the GEMS central tabulator program from Diebold Election Systems.

Thank you Abbe Delozier, for having some relative in California who works with Baxter!

Yes -- Abbe is a truly unsung hero who has done SO much. Thanks also to Dr. Herbert Thompson, who said hacking these things is so easy he could write a program "for a monkey to do it" -- and then it turned out that DIEBOLD itself wrote a program so simple a monkey can do it.

So, we thought, let's train a chimp to actually hack the Diebold system!

But where to find such a chimp? Should it be a college educated chimp? A movie star chimp? Enter Austin activist and PR whiz, Abbe Delozier, who put us in touch with the trainers of Baxter.

Vivi Friedman, an outstanding producer of TV commercials, used the actual footage of Baxter deleting audit records to create this now-famous "Chimp video." Vivi, who is from Finland, recognized Baxter -- from German television, where he starred in his own show. It was Vivi Friedman who suggested that we contact Harri Hursti, a friend of hers from Finland. Hursti worked with Black Box Voting to conduct the first red team attacks with U.S. voting systems.

When we released the Baxter video, I was interviewed by a number of major media outlets, and Baxter's photo appeared in the New York Times.

My nomination for most idiotic quote: Scripps-Howard reporter, who said (in seriousness) "but -- elections officials would know if a chimpanzee got into the voting machine room."

Thanks to all of you who have used this entertaining -- and all too real -- video to tell the truth about the realities of voting machine security.

Truth has a way of asking to be let out. And ordinary citizens like to help the truth escape into places where it can be seen.

Thank you BBV for your efforts in helping us meet our usability tests.

As we are buddies of Mr Bush, he asked us personally if we could make the machine so that even he could use it. Your tests have ensured us that he may, with some arduous training, also be able to use the machines. The expresion 'even a chimp' has never been so important to us.

Hank - heh. Well, the symbolism of the chimp was not lost on me, since -- though this organization is nonpartisan -- my personal views don't favor Mr. Bush.

However, other members of Black Box Voting do vote Rebublican, and did vote for Bush. They are just as passionate about election reform as any of us. Jim March, though I don't know how he voted, tends very definitely Republican.

When you strip out the politics, what you are left with is a broken election system that neither party should tolerate. The fact that both major parties not only tolerate it but fight against reforming it says a great deal.

Note that the latest PR hack hired by Diebold is the former head of the Democratic National Committee, Joe Andrew. While visiting the video section, I encourage you to check out the steaming pile coming out of his mouth in a video of Andrew at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections meeting. The crowd was so disgusted they could not contain snorts of derision, and you can hear their gasps in the audio of that clip.

Hmm, a watermark would be nice...video.google.com does give people the option of downloading the video onto their hard-drive. I'll see if I add one before putting it up...that is if nobody minds.

I guess this video has been around already. But a watermark pointing to blackboxvoting.org I think would be good. I hope to add one today and wait for approval. I don't plan to delay the upload much further.

Baxter is on google video

I added a little blurb in the text on the side about how this relates to recent events and linked it to the call to action for 2-17...at least for now. It's easy to change later.

Very nice!

Here in Montreal (I am a dual US-Canadian citizen) they had some of the same controversy over our municipal elections.

Of course, people were saying the same things, "There's no oversight, and no transparency!"

Also, a confession: I forgot to vote this time around. City elections are a bore :-)

Quote of the Day:

Chris Riggall, a spokesman for Premier Election Solutions (formerly Diebold), the electronic machines maker said, "It is unfortunate this decision will result in moving away from a voting platform that has proven to be 100 percent accurate, has opened accessibility to physically challenged voters and has been shown to significantly reduce voter errors (undervotes and overvotes) that can invalidate their selections."
