Airs Nov. 2 on HBO at 9 pm Eastern (check local listings) New York Times: "Rigged voting in Louisiana? Say it ain’t so. But it’s not shocked-shocked you feel watching this; it’s genuine shock. As the drama proceeds, adducing more evidence for the unreliability of the voting machines than can possibly be explored here, you might also feel flattened. Computers count around 80 percent of votes in America. The marketing director for Diebold, Mark Radke, who defends both the company and its chief executive ... talks in maddening doublespeak and wears the arched-eyebrow expression of a silent-movie fiend. His Nixon-era nondenial denials turn the stomach. Boston Herald -- Grade: A -- "The thought of watching a documentary on possible voting fraud may sound as appealing as, say, a PBS special on mushroom farming (say, is it pledge week yet?), but "Hacking Democracy" (tonight at 9) unravels like a "24" episode... Baltimore Sun: The premium cable channel hits it out of the park again with "Hacking Democracy", a timely and chilling look at alarming problems in the way our votes are counted. It will be shown on HBO-East at 9pm EST and on HBO-West at 12am EST, i.e. 9 pm PST. Apparently, cable systems get their choice of which feed to use. In California, some cable systems are showing it at 6pm, others at 9pm Pacific time. The moral - check the TV listening for your local cable system. |

Wonderful Documentary! I applaude the Black Box group. I can't decide whether I feel glad that this is being exposed and I know about it or if I feel sick about my democracy seemingly disintegrating before my very eyes. It makes me sick what I watched! Thank you for making me sick to my stomach. You have motivated me. I hope that you all keep fighting the good fight. |

This was an incredible documentary. I truly wish though that I could be surprised by the findings, I just cant. Thank you so much for all of the long hours and hard work you did for the US citizens. If only we had a government that cared and worked half as hard this country would still be a great place. Incidentally, the next county over from me (Jefferson County, Texas) has been having some early voting problems with people voting democrat but it counts as republican. Im sure you already know about this but just in case..... Thank you all again. God Bless !!! |

My husband and I just finished watching this excellent documentary and I am deeply disturbed by its revelations in light of the upcoming elections. The eroding of our privacy and fundimental rights must cease, for these are the very things that define us as a republic. My son, a US Marine, and thousands like him are putting their lives on the line every day. Perhaps it is time for we citizens to end our complacency and take action. Thank you for bringing this business to light, and I hope each and every viewer was as shocked as I at your simple demonstration of the ease of perpetrating voter fraud. |

THANK YOU!!! Hallelujah! I felt that the fix was in back in '02 and ever since. With the airing of this engrossing fine film, I now see a small glimmer of hope. Every citizen must see this. In short, we must demand an end to E-voting, or at the very least, an end to Diebold's involvement. We must act before we're all deemed enemy combatants! Of the people for the people and by the people! Thank you, thank you, thank you! |

We just finished watching "Hacking Democracy" on HBO and I feel like I've been had. I feel lied to, and tricked, and like the country I thought was all about freedom has played me for a puppet or a pawn. I cried watching this. Because I knew the 2000 election was a fraud and we, as a country, just "bent over and took it". But now it seems the 2004 was too and what has happened? Nothing. Why did Kerry concede so quickly? I remember waking up the next morning and just being shocked that it was all over. And as much as I think this documentary has opened peoples eyes, will anything really be done? Or will those who question authority continue to be viewed as unpatriotic troublemakers? I mean, in order to find out the TRUTH about the Diebold machines you had to break the law to do it! I'm shocked, I feel like I got beat up. I feel lost. |

I happened to catch this program tonight while I was flipping through the channels. All I can really say is that I found the information in it to be VERY disturbing. I have several questions after watching it, most importantly: Why was no one punished for throwing away signed ballots? That is a violation of federal law. Why was diebold not prosecuted in CA? If people do these things, are caught doing them and no action is taken against them, what is to discourage this practice in the future? |

Hi Heather, As to "will anything really be done?" it depends on all of us, doesn't it! Maybe we'll stop collectively waiting for someone else to fix things for us. This is a call for us all to remember that protecting our democracy depends on us. |

I heard the rumblings about electronic voting but I could not comprehend the depth of situation even as I watched it. I wasn’t shocked; it literally scared the hell out of me. I have hounded my best friend and some of my family to vote since I turned 18. The typical response from them has been “my vote wont make a difference” or the ironic one “It’s rigged any way ". Now after the HBO special and this web site I realize that THEY were probably Wright all along. I had no idea how far beyond hanging chads things were in Florida. To think that a corporation or somebody paying a corp. could “Elect” a president or should I say another president makes my skin crawl. What was it that Jefferson said about taking back the government when our representatives were too stupid or blind to see what is really going on? I was in the court house a couple of weeks ago and saw the pamplet on the new machines I will be voting on, I only had one question " Is there a paper trail "? And the reply was yes. I thought well at least there is some accountability, I could be wrong Is it possible that we could loose the true form of Democracy to a corporation or have we already. |

I saw your HBO program tonight and even though I am a Canadian living in Canada it sickens me. The American people are being fleeced by another corporate rapist. This Diebold company is worse than Enron in that they not only ripped people off but they robbed US citizens of their democratic rights to fair elections. The more I follow the US elections the more the line between the Russian style of elections and the rampent corruption in governement and the US style of government is becoming blurry. Canada is not perfect and we have our own problems so yes I am throwing rocks at glass house. My concern is that if the US election machine has such contempt for the one citizen - one vote idea the US is in trouble. This calls into question the commitment of governments, at all levels, to true democracy. If the US looses the moral high ground on Democracy then how can it lead by example. In closing something caught my attention; in one of the segments one of the computer scientist were looking at some data and if I am not mistaken it was Microsoft Access. If Acces is being used then there is a security problem because it's got secutiry holes everywhere. If this multi-million dollar company does not have the ability to do better than Access then you guys were fleeced big time. Again, great program tonight. |

I just finished watching your documentary and must say I am not shocked but deeply saddened, angry and frustrated. I admit it will take the sting out of Tuesdays election, as I feel that it will turn out the same. However, I am going to get invovled with trying to stop this terrible terrible crime being committed to the American people. If we cannot have free and fair elections in this country, what does it say to the rest of the world? Of course it starts with us and I for one refuse to stay silent. We need to mobilized great numbers of people to stop this outrage and take back our right to free and fair elections. Excellent documentary tonight. Keep up the good work. |

Great documentary. It''s really eye-opening and makes me want to get involved, so I came here to sign up. I'll do what I can! I hate dishonesty - politicians, corporations, people etc. It would be great if HBO would let this be broadcast on Network TV, CNN, TBS etc - channels that aren't premium - this week, so the masses could see it - and it should be broadcast commercial free, as a public service. |

I am glad to see that after so many years somebody has finally taken action to show the american people all the fraud in our election system. However, election fraud is not the only scam these people have perpetrated on the American people. I live in Eugene, Oregon, last month I saw a video on google video, about the huge number of lies this govenment has given us about what really happened on 911. The video shocked me, and I searched for more related items. Please, I know that people that questioned the truth, are always labeled as conspiracy theorists, (but I beg you people to check out these videos that I list at the end on this posting) but after a month of checking out all the available evidence I am 100% sure that : 1, 911 was an inside job, and even members of the Bush family were personally involved on the plot . 2, the planes you saw on 911 crashing were not the real pasenger planes with the people ( I also wander, what did they do with all those people?) 3. Osama B was actively working for the US government ( I know it sounds shocking but there is a plenty of evidence to back this up) 4. Building 7 of the World Trade Center was never hit by a plane but it was demolised any way. 5, There is plenty of proof thet the towers did not collapse due to the plane impact, nor due to the fires, those towers were wire weeks before september 11 2001, and during the chaos and panic, many explosions were witnessed by countles people, firefighters, policemen, news people, and even on tape, also to cover the fact that those towers came down due to a controlled demolition. (I am not crazy people I beg you to look at the evidence and then just then you can write me a hate email if you must) 5. I can come up with a lot more but I am not going to. My friends not only they use machines to steal the 2000, 2004, etc... elections but the Bush administration has actively conspired with foreign enemies of this country to murder 3000, people on those towers, almost 3000, soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan, 655,000 citizens of Iraq and that seems to be just the beggining of their game. I am sick with myasthenia gravis. I don't have the strengh to move around and help expose these facts but I want to ask for any of you to use the Black Box approach and please expose these murderers and get some justice done. "If there is nothing to hide about 911 why is it that the Bush administration is hiding everything about 911? Thanks Among the many videos I found these are the best ones : 911 in plane Site, 911 Mysteries, loose change, 911 demolition Please send all hate emails to : alexponce16@mac.com |

Read this: http://www6.diebold.com/dieboldes/pdf/hbopointbypoint.pdf Then note this: ALLEN, Texas, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- In a letter to HBO chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht, Diebold Election System President David Byrd says that the documentary Hacking Democracy "contains significant factual errors and does not meet HBO standards for accuracy and fairness." For starters, the documentary and the synopsis on HBO's web site say that Diebold counted more than 40 percent of the votes nationwide in the 2000 Presidential election. But that is impossible. Diebold was not in the electronic voting business in 2000. It is all downhill from there. "Truth and accurate reporting are the biggest casualties of the film," Byrd said. Byrd writes that the errors and misrepresentations are "so egregious that HBO should pull the documentary." Byrd specifically asks that HBO post on its web page a statement from Diebold Election Systems on November 1, 2006; that the statement remain on the HBO web page for as long as the documentary runs on the pay programming channel; and that HBO show a 30-second disclaimer immediately before, immediately after and at least once during each airing of Hacking Democracy indicating that HBO has not verified the accuracy of the claims made in the film. A full copy of Byrd's letter can be found on the Diebold Election Systems web site, http://www.dieboldes.com. So who is more trustworthy? The Diebold corporation, or the other corporation HBO. Where are the HBO watchdogs picking apart everything they do, protecting the people from disinformation? I guess it isn't pertinent to investigate someone who backs your agenda. Just like Dateline NBC putting explosives in SUVs and then reporting that these SUV models could "catch fire and explode" if in accidents, and Dan Rather reporting a story that was made up by his source, the mainstream media corporations are participating in the same sleazy crap that they impugn others for. They bend the facts and blur the truth intentionally trying to deceive people to get ratings and advance their agenda. This was no documentary, this was propaganda. It was totally staged. It's all a fear mongering political stunt. Period. Interesting to note that not a single one of these machines are capable of being on the internet, so you would have to hack them while attempting to vote at the polls. I suppose you could steal them, hack them, then attempt to break back in and put them back. I highly doubt this is a likely scenario. If election officials do their jobs, people's votes will be fine. I honestly saw nothing wrong with the old punch card method at all, but it was the democrat whining about the 2000 election that brought all this digital voting crap to the forefront. You reap what you sew. Democrats participate in voter fraud and disenfranchise voters just as much as Republicans do. Both parties will do just about anything to gain power and keep it; there is absolutely no difference between the two. Neither party wants to pass campaign reform, no one wants to clean up a system when there are advantages to both sides for having it as messed up and flawed as it is. This is what is ruining America. And as much as you people whine and cry and post your conspiracy theories about one side, the same crap is being promoted on the other side albeit through different channels. Wake up and start supporting third parties that want to clean up the corruption and maybe it will happen. (Message edited by psilence on November 03, 2006) |

To one and all... (especially the new folks) (and apologies for the semi-cross-posting!...) Welcome! Welcome! Well, thanks to Bev, it is indeed Morning in America again! I DIDN'T see the movie, but I've been watching it unfold (and perhaps helping a tiny bit here and there) for the last six years. I firmly believe Bev and the crew, and Brad Friedman (Bradblog.com), and John Gideon (VotersUnite.org), and many others deserve, and will someday get, a Congressional Medal of Honor for everything they are doing. NOW, it's time to suck it up, folks. Rage and dismay and grief for our sorry state is right and proper, but now it's time to go to the streets. We need EVERYONE who is outraged by the ongoing assault on our Democracy to make themselves heard. Tell your friends to watch the movie! Send that spam you always avoid sending to your entire address book, and tell them to watch the movie! CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN! CALL YOUR STATE REPS and GOVERNORS! RIGHT NOW! (Okay, Monday is probably better...) DEMAND PAPER BALLOTS and HAND COUNTING, and non-partisan Secretaries of State, and non-partisan election commissions, and non-partisan Redistricting Commissions (and IRV - Instant Runoff Voting, while we're at it). We must direct this glorious righteous fury into ACTION, the 21st Century equivalent of Storming the Bastille, and THAT is how we will save our country. We have not yet begun to fight! Mac Maynard, MA P.S. Step #3 - Get out there and VOTE! |

quote:Diebold was not in the electronic voting business in 2000.
Diebold finalized acquisition of Global Election Systems in January 2002. Global Election Systems subsequently changed its name to Diebold Election Systems, Inc. Global acquired I-Mark in 1997. The I-Mark voting terminals were used in 37 states in the 2000 election. Do you dispute any of these facts? The votes were counted on equipment manufactured by a company now called DieBold. The documentary was not only disturbing but it made me so angry that our government and courts have led us down a fool’s path. When corporations can control our election process, we as an open society are doomed. The true sadness in the whole mess is the people we elect to ensure that our vote counts are so corrupt that they are now above the law. |

I feel compelled to write these words as I have just seen the HBO doc and am too disgusted. I have lie in the past by omitting the whole truth, and technically what I said would not have been judged as a lie. However I knew in my hart that I just lied. I can recognize for myself when someone is doing the same and I saw it during the broadcast. To all of you that take the time to read my words and conjure an option that supports "nothing is wrong in the government" you should know that when seeking public office one must tell lies or learn to lie. It is well known that a government official MUST protect some secrets to protect its citizens, however this atmosphere breads a feeling of ease while not telling the truth. The byproduct is not feeling bad while giving them selves a raise as our leaders can do. This was not always the case but if they can get away with one thing why not push it to get away with more that will benefit them selves. Isn’t this what we humans teach ourselves as we grow up, to push the boundaries? We, as voters, must be involved with the process. That makes us the grown up’s and the politicians the children that will try to get away with any thing they can. I will vote and do intend to encourage those around me to do the same. However keep in mind that many people do not hold the things that you hold as precious. That is one of the great things about America; that we are not carbon copies of each other. So you may have many things worked out that make sense for you but I say it may mean nothing to me. I am of the opinion that what I have watched is a small portion of what is going on out there, not that that is the whole truth. So learn for your selves. I did like seeing an earlier post that tried to state the facts that Diebold was not in the electronic voting business, the whole truth is that Diebold is what they call them selves now. Keep coming up with facts because I will learn from each. Thank you all. |

I watched the documentary on HBO & was in absolute SHOCK, this was truely an amazing story & think should be seen by every American young & old to expose the real truth about what can, and is happening to our country. We the people trust & elect our goverment & must demand that the election process be protected. I personally will not vote on any Diebold machine. Awesome job to expose this & every american should standup (This is our Country) & demand answers & soultions to insure accurate vote counts!! FANTASTIC JOB |

I watched the documentary this morning, while i updated my little brother..my baby brother via instant messenger regarding the verdict in the hussain trial. He warned that communications would be shut down any minute..as there are thousands in disbelief in the streets irregardless of the military no movement curfew..WHY ARENT WE IN THE STREETS??!! I am shocked and dismayed at my country..i'd probably be less devistated to find out that my father..the man ive known for 32 years was a mass murderer or better yet not my father. I am devistated and left realing..what can I do..what can we do..i am tempted to burn thousands of bootleg copied of this documentary and pass them out to anyone who will take one. |

I watched the documentary and I'm not surprised. I've been following Clint Curtis story for a year, and I think this documentary proves he's telling the truth. Now...who is Clint Curtis? http://summit.oregonvrc.org/node/292 |

As a late political bloomer (29 tender years) I am just beginning to understand the effects of the people in office on my everyday life. That's when I finally realized the best thing to do is NOT LET THEM IN OFFICE!!! Thankfully I am in New York, a very proud Blue State. I don't have as much to worry about other than our idiot Governor. That will change on Tuesday. This documentary was a real eye opener! Cuyahoga County could have spent HALF the cost of those voting machines to hire people to tally the votes BY HAND. It would've taken too long, maybe; however we vote in November and the electorates don't start their positions until January, right? That's at LEAST 6 weeks of counting time. Plenty in my mind. How were ballots counted before computers anyway? By hand? Hmmmmmmm... Any thoughts from anyone else? |

After watching your excellent documentary, I am compelled to do something to help. It seems hand counting might be the only solution. So it takes a few days or even weeks to hand count each election. We've become so used to having everything handed to us "right now". We need to have the patience to wait for accurate results. I intend to write letters to my Senators and Representatives on both the state and federal levels demanding their support in requiring paper ballots and hand counts for all elections. Thank you for your hard work to expose the truth about what is really happening. |

All politicians should be concerned about the accuracy of their elections. Public opinion hinges on 10 sec. sound bite. If vote hacking can happen, it can happen to the "in" party as well. Paper printouts should be mandatory for all precincts. Oh - and thank heaven for the internet. No HBO in our house; but after seeing this, maybe I should subscribe! Thanks to your documentary, I'll understand the issues tomorrow and Wed. when rumors/proof of vote tampering appear! |

It's very sad that things have come to this in such a great country, but I truly believe Ben Gates said it best moments before deciding to steal the Declaration of Independence (National Treasure btw): " But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." |

After watching the documentary I was suprised that their was any significant controversy at all. All the documentary stated against electronic voting was that if you stole the memory cards you could modify them. This is not an entirely suprisingly huge revelation, I originally thought it was too simple an answer for such a supposedly huge problem. However, I do believe that Diebold is partly to blame, there are several relatively simple ways to insure that data cannot be tampered with before and after an election, which is all that the documentary proved to me. The documentary did not show me enough evidence to completely blame Diebold, I personally think they were simply lazy or did not think of all the possible ways their product could be tampered with. To the argument that keeping the source code of these machines a secret is a conspiracy/illegal/etc... , you need to look at basic Licensing agreements and their intent. By preventing anyone from knowing the inner workings of a piece of software, you in fact prevent people from hacking it, you cannot hack something that you have no understanding of, you lack any sort of starting point. Software/electronic systems vary far too much to be able to use one technique for everything, hence why hack type things such as "blue boxes" that worked on phone systems until the early '90s no longer work, the inner workings of the system were changed and kept secret to prevent this very type of thing. I do find it disturbing that the paper trail seems to have been thrown out, and that perhaps the standard practices for election administration needs to be revised/audited in some locations. |
