Oriental voting hours extended due to late opening
http://www.newbernsj.com/news/bennett_39359___article.html/oriental_elections.ht ml

Voting hours have been extended until 8:30 p.m. today in the Oriental polling precinct after it opened an hour late.

Pamlico County Elections Supervisor Lisa Bennett said the precinct poll judge, Maquina Thomas, did not show up and election forms and a cassette that activates the voting machines and counts the votes had to be duplicated.

Bennett said Thomas called around noon and reported that she had car problems and had been unable to get to a telephone.

The decision to extend the voting hours came before noon during an emergency meeting of the three-member county Board of Elections.

"There were people who had to go on to work this morning and this gives them extra time after they get home," Bennett said.

The Oriental votes cast between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. will not be in the unofficial totals tonight. They will be counted as provisional, and subject to approval in the post-election canvass on May 13.

Other than the Oriental matter, Bennett said, reports from the other polling places showed a good turnout and no mechanical problems.

There are no county races in the Oriental precinct, which is headquartered at the Southeast Pamlico Volunteer Fire Department on Straight Road.

The fact that "polls open late" ballots are all provisionals is a HAVA mandate. It allows for a "backing out" of late votes in case the later poll closing is later overturned.
