Former St. Martinville councilwoman pleads guilty to vote fraud charges
LAFAYETTE, La. Former Saint Martinville City Council member Pamela Thibodeaux pleaded guilty today to federal voter fraud charges.
Thibodeaux faces up to five years in prison after admitting that she falsified information on voter registration forms to allow people from outside District Three to vote for her in the 2002 city elections.
In that election, Thibodeaux, who is white, beat black challenger Mary Francois by 13 votes. Francois sued, charging election fraud. But Thibodeaux's election stood when a district court judge ruled that only 12 votes had been proved to be improper.
Francois was seated in the courtroom's front row when Thibodeaux entered her plea.
No sentencing date has been set.
