From Bev Harris: Here are quick tips to help you pick out expenditures related to elections:

Have been looking at some expenditures, ran across this online (and appreciate the fact that Hopkinton (Mass.) embraces public right to know by publishing their invoice list ("warrants").

Thought some of you might like a tip on how to identify the election-related expenses on documents like these.

Each vendor is assigned a number; each expenditure is assigned into a category. So, for example, you may see a phone company with a certain vendor number, with several different expenditure numbers -- one for telephone in the clerk's office, one corresponding to telephone in the police dept., etc.

By looking at the expenditure category number for a known vendor, like LHS Associates, which we know is likely to be doing elections work, and then searching for all other expenditures with the same category number, we can often identify the other recipients of election-related funds.

Here is a link to a recent warrant list for the town of Hopkinton MA:

10-42.pdf (50.9 k)

Now, look at the pictures below to see how to identify some election-related expenses:

Here is the warrant for LHS Associates, which assigns # 886 and #501.

Here are additional category 886 and 501 warrants:

By searching for the word "election" we find another category, #286, election supplies:

Thought some of you might find this helpful.
