the link above takes you to a troubleshooting report from Sacramento County, CA. Useful as a model for thinking through tech problems, and as an example of extending the solution beyond the immediate cause to the numerous contributing factors.

In this example, ink color (particular shades of lavender, brown, and blue weren't recognized), ink color intensity (ES&S has no specs on this as of the report's writing), failure of ES&S to provide specification updates to authorized ballot printing facilities, location/placement of ink on the ballot, failure to address a type of calibration (DAC) listed in the manual as included in preventative maintenance (but not done and not included, according to ES&S), and unacceptably low level of competence among maintenance technicians were identified among the issues.
